“Powerful words!!!!!! Truly inspiring.” (Adisa, performance poet.)
“Very inspiring and thought provoking… melding story with higher order thinking, and using very tactile and kinaesthetic imagery — just the sort of thing we need to offer children” (Pamela Smyth, Arts Education Advisor, Bromley.)
“David performed a three hour story about the conflict between youth subcultures to 180 year 9 pupils in the hall. The story also explored issues connected with families, drug addiction, ethnicity and relationships and it ended with the resolution of conflict. I loved the way he free-associated in response to pupil contributions and tied their comments into the story. He had the audience eating out of his hand right from the start, and kept them engaged throughout. My immediate reaction was to invite David back on a regular basis. I would certainly recommend Abracadia as a great shared experience for pupils and staff. Fantastic.” (Steve Clarke, Head of English, Bishop Justus School, Bromley.)
“[The Abracadia workshop] has enlightened my awareness of how to use story to empower, change attitudes and create positive self image in a learning environment.” (Ethnic Minority Achievement conference delegate, Hammersmith and Fulham.)
“David is highly intellectual and very informative on his subject. His relationship and engagement with pupils is extremely impressive. Our students (hard to reach) were really engaged for a four hour workshop on storytelling, these students are known to be very challenging and confrontational. I suggest that you discuss with David the exact content and format in how you want the workshop to run. He definitely has my approval and recommendation.” (Sharon Langrish, Head of PSHE, Haverstock School, Camden.)
“David performed at St. Martin’s School in Lambeth. His sessions were very interesting and instructive. I would certainly recommend him. I would however suggest that he is used in the way he prefers — which is to develop his stories with time to get pupils into workshops to work on the themes of his stories” (Brian Netto, Schools Improvement Advisor, Lambeth.) “Brilliant! I can’t wait to put this into practice.” (The South, Writers’ Workshop.) “The best training we have ever had!” (National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education) |

“Fantastic! Working to four groups of 200 each, eight hundred pupils were held totally throughout. This is quite unlike anything I have seen before. The pupils really enjoyed it and gained a lot. I would certainly recommend Abracadia most highly.” (Lee Cornwall, PSZ Manager, Orleans Park School, Richmond.) |

“Really something special!” (Layne Gneiting, master storyteller & professor of communication studies, Arizona State University.) |

David Avery was invited to Underhill Junior School for a day of Story-telling during our International Week. His task was considerable, there are 4 year groups with 90 children in each year. He told stories from around the world -Iran, Somalia, Japan and India. The care, effort and thought that he put into the day meant that each story session was adapted and pitched superbly to the age, attention-span and dynamics of the year group. The children were enthralled and delighted as they were brilliantly and expertly led into different worlds of Zen masters, flying monsters and tricksters. David is a fantastic story-teller who managed to sprinkle some magic story-telling dust over all children on that day. (L.Hamilton, EMA Co-ordinator, Underhill School, Barnet.) |
